  • Il-Banda Ta’ Indri

Many, particularly those of a certain generation, recall The Greenfields singing about "Il-Banda Ta’ Indri." This song, released by the trio in 1975 on Electro Records as a single, featured "A Song Of Love" on the B-side. But how many of us truly know the story behind "Il-Banda Ta’ Indri" and who Indri was? Born in Valletta on January 7, 1818, Andrea Borg, better known as Master Indri, was a remarkable figure in Maltese musical history, despite facing the significant challenge of losing his sight at the tender age of two. The son of Salvatore Borg and Antonia née Bonello, Indri was struck blind following an accident, a tragedy that could have easily hindered his potential. However, instead of succumbing to his disability, Indri developed an extraordinary aptitude for music, which not only defined his life but also left an indelible mark on Malta’s cultural heritage. From a young age, it was evident that Indri possessed an exceptional musical talent. Even as a child, he could distinguish between different instruments being played during church services, demonstrating an innate understanding of music. Recognising his son’s potential, Indri's parents arranged for him to study under one of Valletta’s most esteemed conductors, Maestro Rull, who was also the Maestro di Cappella at the Co-Cathedral of St. John. Under Maestro Rull’s guidance, Indri first learned to play the flute, known then as the 'flejguta', and later, the clarinet, which became his favoured instrument. His passion for music extended beyond just learning to play; he became proficient in numerous instruments, including the guitar, and eventually took up the role of conductor and music teacher. Remarkably, Indri’s blindness did not prevent him from composing music. He devised an ingenious method akin to the Braille system, using wax balls of different sizes attached to raised staff lines, which allowed him to compose without ever having seen a musical score. He would create melodies by feeling the staff lines with his fingers and placing the wax balls to represent musical notes. Once he had finished composing, he would dictate the music to someone who would transcribe it onto paper. Indri’s compositions were varied and prolific. He wrote hymns, marches, dances, and sonatas, and his first hymn, dedicated to St. Dominic, was performed in 1860. Other notable hymns were dedicated to St. Philip, St. Publius, St. Andrew, and Our Lady of Liesse, with the verses often penned by prominent literary figures of the time such as Zammit Brighella, Professor Cesare Vassallo, and Antonio Crescimanno. In 1854, Indri also dictated a comprehensive treatise on music in Maltese, spanning 150 pages, which discussed harmony, scoring, and counterpoint, serving as a commentary on an 1854 work by another author. In addition to his contributions as a composer, Indri was a skilled organ repairer and restorer. Among his notable projects was the restoration of the organ at the Mdina Cathedral and the meticulous dismantling and reassembly of the 1037 pipes of the organ at St. Paul Shipwrecked in Valletta, a task that took him two years to complete. Indri Borg also made a significant impact on Malta’s band music scene. According to historian Pietru Pawl Castagna, Indri founded the first musical band in Malta around 1860, which later became known as "Il-Banda ta’ Indri." This band, comprising about sixty musicians, many of whom played string instruments, performed at various significant events, including weddings and village festivals. Indri’s reputation as a bandleader grew, and he was instrumental in the development of several other bands across Malta, including the St. Philip Band in Żebbuġ and the L'Isle Adam Band in Rabat. Despite his numerous achievements, Indri’s life was marked by hardship. He remained poor throughout his life, a stark contrast to the fame and recognition his musical talents brought him. He passed away in poverty at St. Vincent de Paul Elderly Hospital in Luqa on March 15, 1903, at the age of 84. Yet, his legacy endures, particularly in the realm of Maltese band music, where he is remembered as a pioneer who overcame his blindness to contribute significantly to his country’s cultural heritage. Indri Borg’s life and work offer an inspiring testament to the power of perseverance and passion. His ability to transcend his disability and make enduring contributions to Maltese music underscores the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. Today, his name is synonymous with some of the earliest organised bands in Malta, and his innovative methods of composition continue to be a testament to his genius. • Tash Sultana: A Musical Journey from Melbourne’s Streets to Global Stardom

Tash Sultana, born on June 15, 1995, in Melbourne, Australia, has become a distinctive and powerful voice in the global music scene. As a gender-fluid, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and music producer, Sultana is often described as a "one-person band," a fitting label for an artist who creates, performs, and produces all of their music single-handedly. With roots stretching back to Malta through their father's side, Sultana’s journey from busking on the streets of Melbourne to international acclaim is a story of relentless passion, raw talent, and a refusal to conform. Early Life and Maltese Heritage An Australian of Maltese ancestry on their father's side, Sultana was born and raised in Melbourne, where their musical journey began early. At the age of three, they received a guitar from their grandfather—a gift that would become a cornerstone in their life and career. This early introduction to music set the stage for Sultana’s deep and lifelong connection to the guitar, which has remained central to their artistry. By the age of 13, Sultana was already performing at open mic nights across Victoria, sometimes as many as six times a week. Their early exposure to Melbourne's vibrant live music scene, combined with their innate musical talent, helped Sultana hone their craft at a young age. Despite these early successes, Sultana struggled to find regular work due to their refusal to conform to social norms, leading them to busking on the streets of Melbourne—a decision that would prove pivotal in their career. The Breakthrough: "Jungle" and Notion In 2016, Sultana’s career took a meteoric turn with the release of their single "Jungle." A video of the track shared on social media quickly went viral, amassing over one million views within five days and catapulting Sultana into the spotlight. The song’s raw energy and Sultana’s unique, layered performance style resonated deeply with listeners, and "Jungle" was voted into third place in Triple J's Hottest 100 countdown of 2016. This success was a precursor to the release of their EP Notion , which showcased Sultana’s remarkable range as a multi-instrumentalist and their ability to weave complex sonic tapestries. Notion  was released in September 2016 through Sultana’s own independent label, Lonely Lands Records. The EP’s success was immediate, reaching number 8 on the ARIA Album Chart and leading to a sold-out world tour in early 2017. During this period, Sultana continued to perform at major festivals, including the Woodford Folk Festival and St Jerome's Laneway Festival, further cementing their status as a rising star in the global music scene. A True One-Person Band Sultana's reputation as a "one-person band" is not just a moniker; it is a testament to their incredible skill set. Sultana plays a wide array of instruments, including guitar, keyboard, bass, percussion, trumpet, saxophone, flute, mandolin, oud, harmonica, and more. Their performances often involve live looping, where they layer these instruments to create rich, multi-faceted soundscapes in real-time. Their guitar playing, characterized by percussive finger-tapping and intricate melodies, has become a signature element of their music. Sultana’s vocal abilities are equally impressive, with a reported range stretching across five octaves. This versatility allows them to experiment with different vocal styles, from delicate falsettos to powerful, soulful expressions, adding another layer of depth to their already complex compositions. International Acclaim and Flow State The release of Sultana's debut album Flow State  in 2018 marked another significant milestone in their career. The album quickly became Gold certified, with singles like "Mystik" and "Murder to the Mind" achieving Platinum and Gold status. Flow State  showcased Sultana’s ability to blend genres seamlessly, drawing from rock, reggae, blues, and electronic influences to create a sound that is uniquely their own. The album’s success propelled Sultana onto the international stage, with performances at major festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo. In 2019 alone, Sultana sold over 500,000 concert tickets worldwide, further solidifying their status as a global phenomenon. Their live performances, characterized by their incredible musicianship and dynamic stage presence, have garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. Terra Firma and Continued Evolution Sultana’s second album, Terra Firma , released in 2021, continued to build on the success of Flow State . The album was written and recorded over nearly two years, with Sultana leading the entire process—recording, engineering, performing, arranging, and producing every track. For the first time, however, Sultana brought in collaborators like Matt Corby, Dann Hume, Jerome Farah, and Josh Cashman to co-write some of the tracks. Terra Firma  was praised for its raw and reflective songwriting, as well as its ambitious musical arrangements, showcasing Sultana’s continued growth as an artist. A New Era in 2023 As 2023 unfolds, Sultana continues to push the boundaries of their music. With the release of new singles like "James Dean" and "Bitter Lovers," Sultana has ushered in a new era of creativity, one that promises to further expand their already extensive catalog. Their ability to continuously evolve while staying true to their unique artistic vision is a testament to their enduring appeal and immense talent. Legacy and Impact Since breaking into the Australian music scene more than a decade ago, Tash Sultana has been nothing short of a musical force. Their journey from busking on Melbourne’s Bourke Street to selling out arenas around the world is a story of passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to their craft. With billions of streams, numerous awards, and countless sold-out shows, Sultana has established themselves as one of the most innovative and influential artists of their generation. Tash Sultana’s story is not just one of musical success; it is a testament to the power of staying true to oneself and the impact that can have on the world. From their Maltese roots to the global stage, Sultana continues to inspire and connect with audiences around the world, one note at a time.

  • Atomic Flame: A Flame Igniting the Maltese Heavy Metal Scene

Atomic Flame is a rising force in the heavy metal scene, formed in 2022 amidst the chaos of the global pandemic and the dissolution of previous bands. Born from the collective passion and experience of seasoned musicians, the band features a formidable lineup: Lawrence Baldacchino on drums, Nigel "Noogie" Buttigieg on guitar, Charles Buttigieg on bass, and their newest member, James Galea, taking on lead guitar duties. This lineup, forged from the ashes of their previous musical endeavours, has quickly gained recognition for its raw energy and dedication to the craft. The band's origins date back to 2021, when Lawrence Baldacchino, an accomplished drummer with a rich history in bands like Fire and 12th Ode, began jamming with Campos Gellel, a talented guitarist known for his work with Angelcrypt and Blind Saviour. With the demise of Noogie’s Crew, Lawrence saw an opportunity to invite Nigel Buttigieg to join the nascent project. Nigel, raised in a household steeped in the history of Malta's rock and metal scene, brought his deep love for music and formidable guitar skills to the table. However, the band was still incomplete, and it wasn’t until Charles Buttigieg, Nigel's father, and a veteran of Malta’s metal scene, joined as bassist in December 2021 that the lineup truly began to take shape. Charles’s lyrical talent became the key to transforming the band’s musical ideas into fully formed songs. Despite the early momentum, the band faced a major change when Campos Gellel departed in July 2022. This pivotal moment led to the band rebranding as Atomic Flame, marking a fresh start with a clearer identity. The gap left by Campos was quickly filled by Marco Mulé, a Sicilian guitarist with impressive credentials, having toured with major names such as Grave Digger, Lacuna Coil, and Nanowar of Steel during his time with Ricercados and Psycholies. His experience brought a new dimension to the band’s sound, and the reconfigured Atomic Flame was ready to unleash their powerful blend of heavy metal on audiences. Their live debut came on January 21st, 2023, at The Garage in Zebbug, Malta. The show, performed to a sold-out crowd, was a resounding success and solidified Atomic Flame’s reputation as one of the most exciting new bands on the island. In the months that followed, the band released their first two singles: Innocence Becomes Prey on May 1st, 2023, and Hunter on December 2nd, 2023. Both tracks showcased their dynamic range, from intricate guitar solos to driving rhythms and haunting lyrics, solidifying their position in the metal scene. Atomic Flame's momentum only grew with each performance. On March 16th, 2023, they opened for Time Lord, a band comprised of members from the legendary Pagan Altar, fronted by Forsaken’s Leo Stivala. The gig garnered rave reviews and further established the band’s reputation. Later that year, on November 11th, they supported the Italian power metal band Scala Mercalli, once again at The Garage, drawing enthusiastic responses from both fans and critics. As the band continued to evolve, a significant lineup change came in May 2024 when Marco Mulé was replaced by James Galea. James, a guitarist with a long history in the Maltese rock and metal scene, brought a wealth of experience and creativity to the band. From his early days of being inspired by KISS on TV to his extensive work in bands like Purple Haze and Dreamscape, James had developed a deep understanding of melody and song structure. His return to the metal scene, after years away from active performance, has energized Atomic Flame with fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose. The individual stories of Atomic Flame's members add depth to the band's narrative. Nigel Buttigieg, for instance, grew up surrounded by music, often accompanying his father, Charles, to rehearsals and gigs. Inspired by his dad’s tales of Malta’s vibrant rock scene in the '80s, Nigel quickly developed a passion for heavy metal. His pivotal moment came when he first heard Black Sabbath’s Paranoid and later Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast, which inspired him to pick up the guitar after initially starting on drums. Marco Mulé's background as a Sicilian guitarist with experience playing with internationally recognized bands speaks to Atomic Flame’s expanding influence. While his time with the band may have been short-lived, his contributions helped shape the band's early sound and laid the groundwork for future success. Charles Buttigieg, a veteran of the Maltese music scene since the early 1980s, is another cornerstone of the band. His years of playing with bands like Triton, Valda Cry, and Overdose during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) era have given him a deep well of experience to draw from. Despite stepping away from music for a time, Charles returned in 2003 to form EXPLICIT and later joined Noogie’s Crew alongside his son, Nigel. His lyrical contributions to Atomic Flame have been vital in crafting the band’s signature sound. At the heart of Atomic Flame’s driving force is drummer Lawrence Baldacchino. With a musical career spanning decades, Lawrence’s experience in bands like Necromancer, Rough Rider, and 12th Ode has given him the precision and stamina needed to anchor the band’s powerful sound. His passion for drumming is more than a technical skill—it's a therapeutic practice and a lifelong commitment. Lawrence’s drumming influences span genres, but he credits metal drummer Mike Portnoy as his all-time favourite. His dedication to continuing to perform, even at 65, reflects the same enduring spirit that propels Atomic Flame forward. From an early age, James Galea's fascination with music was sparked by '70s radio hits, shaping his understanding of melody and rhythm. Though drawn to heavy metal, his diverse musical background influenced his guitar playing. At five, KISS's performance on Solid Gold inspired his passion, leading him to begin guitar lessons at 14. He played in various bands, including Purple Haze and Dreamscape, and contributed to musicals and original rock productions. After a break due to the rise of grunge, James returned to music, eventually rejoining the scene in 2024 with Atomic Flame, ready to create and perform once again. With several live performances under their belt and enough original material to fill a full-length album, Atomic Flame stands poised to make their mark on the heavy metal world. Their journey, though marked by lineup changes and the challenges of the pandemic, speaks to the resilience and passion of each band member. The fire that drives Atomic Flame is far from burning out; instead, it’s just beginning to blaze brighter than ever.

Their discography includes thirteen full-length studio albums, one live album, a compilation, a split with Driller Killer (2000), five EPs, and three demos. Local newcomers Halcyon have taken the scene by storm since their debut gig in March 2023. For those who grew up with X-Tend's music, iconic tracks such as "I Can Feel," "Midnight Sun," and "Boys Of Tomorrow" remain vivid reminders of the 1980s. The new album, titled X-Tend 1984-2024,  will be available later this month in major stores, including a vinyl format that has seen a resurgence in popularity akin to its heyday when the band first formed. Despite the passing years, the three members of X-Tend humorously assert that they still feel as youthful as ever—at least in spirit. As many of their hits continue to resonate, particularly their Christmas classics, X-Tend's musical journey is far from over. Following the release of this album, plans are already underway for another collection of hits, this time featuring songs in the Maltese language. • Mary Spiteri: Malta's Iconic Cabaret Artiste and Eurovision Diva

Mary Spiteri, born on October 25, 1947, in Naxxar, Malta, stands as one of the most celebrated figures in the Maltese music scene. With a career spanning over five decades, she has left an indelible mark on the world of cabaret and has become an iconic representative of Malta on the international stage, particularly through her memorable participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Mary Spiteri's journey into the world of music began in her hometown of Naxxar. From a young age, she displayed a natural talent for singing, which quickly propelled her into the local music scene. By the early 1970s, Spiteri had already established herself as a prominent figure in Maltese music, participating in various national competitions and festivals. Mary's first foray into the Eurovision Song Contest came in 1971 when she competed in the Maltese heat with the song "Min Int?" ("Who Are You?"). Although she did not make it to the international stage that year, her passion for Eurovision was far from extinguished. In 1975, she made another attempt with two songs, "Live For Tomorrow" and "Try a Little Love Today," both of which, unfortunately, failed to progress. Despite these early setbacks, Spiteri's determination paid off in 1992 when she was selected to represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden. Her performance of "Little Child" captivated audiences and juries alike, earning her an impressive third place behind Ireland and the United Kingdom. This achievement not only marked a significant milestone in her career but also brought international recognition to Maltese music. Following her success in 1992, Mary Spiteri became a beloved figure among Eurovision fans, gaining a status akin to that of a diva. Her powerful voice and emotional performance of "Little Child" left an enduring legacy, and she was honoured by the Eurovision Network with an award at their convention in Coventry later that year. Despite her newfound fame, Spiteri's subsequent attempts to return to the Eurovision stage were met with mixed results. In 1995, she entered the Maltese final with "Just One Love" but did not place. However, in 1997, she secured third place with "Lovers Play with Words." Undeterred, she continued to pursue her Eurovision dreams, announcing in 2006 her intention to participate in the Malta Song for Europe Festival in 2007. Although her submissions did not make it to the final, her passion for Eurovision remained undiminished. Mary Spiteri's talent extended beyond the Eurovision stage. In 1975, she represented Malta at the Tokyo Music Festival, where she received the "Outstanding Award" for her entry "Go On." This achievement further solidified her reputation as a versatile and accomplished artist. In 1979, Spiteri took her music to the international stage with two large concerts in Australia. Performing at the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Dallas Brooks Hall in Melbourne, she captivated audiences with her powerful voice and stage presence. The Sydney Opera House concert was even filmed and broadcast on television in both Malta and Australia, bringing her music to a wider audience. Mary Spiteri's influence on Maltese music and culture cannot be overstated. Her version of "Tema '79" from the Maltese rock opera Ġensna is one of her most beloved performances, showcasing her ability to bring depth and emotion to every piece she performs. In 2014, it was announced that Spiteri held the record for the longest note in Eurovision history, sustaining a note for an impressive 13 seconds during her 1992 performance of "Little Child." In 2023, Mary Spiteri's remarkable career was celebrated with the concert "Mary Spiteri: My Life." This unique event, which featured a repertoire of her most iconic songs and interviews with the singer herself, offered a glimpse into the life and career of one of Malta's most cherished artists. The concert also marked the first live biography of its kind to be produced in a theatre, highlighting Spiteri's enduring impact on Maltese culture. Mary Spiteri's journey from a young singer in Naxxar to an international music icon is a testament to her talent, determination, and love for music. Her contributions to Maltese and international music, particularly through her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, have left an indelible mark on the hearts of her fans. As she continues to inspire new generations of artists, Mary Spiteri remains a beloved figure in the world of cabaret and beyond, embodying the spirit and resilience of Maltese music.

  • (Not So) New Kids On The Block

Rogue Debuts at The Garage On Saturday, June 15th, Rogue made a striking debut at an event organised by Rankin at The Garage. This new band, composed of seasoned musicians, brought a dynamic and eclectic energy to the stage. The lineup of Rogue includes singer Juan Xerri from Animamortua, and backing singer Valerie Cassar, known for her work with the Iron Maiden Tribute band as well as Oblique Visions and Dislost. Guitarist Adrian Mercieca, formerly of prog rock band Sphinx, adds a touch of vintage rock to the mix. Bassist Philip "Bagigu" Camilleri, who has played in numerous bands, is currently performing with Valiantis, Rock Troupers, and the Iron Maiden Tribute band. Andre’ Schembri, who was with Ivory Cross, now plays keyboards for Stoned, a Rolling Stones tribute band. Drummer Luciano Borg, also an ex-member of Ivory Cross, brings a rich history from bands like Kraken (which also included Philip ‘Bagigu’), Scimitar (with Lega on guitar), and Frantic (with Ivan Filletti, Andrew Alamango and Andrew Sultana), and has a reputation as the guitarist for Syndrome (with Chris Spiteri vocals and keyboards, Jonathan galea on bass, and Fabrizio Giorgio on drums). The name "Rogue" was suggested by Luciano Borg, who explained, "Rogue means 'an unprincipled person with savage or destructive tendencies.' We thought the meaning was appropriate to the band being wild and destructive in nature." Luciano and Adrian began the band by jamming in a garage, eventually inviting others to join. "Luciano and Adrian started jamming in a garage and eventually they asked me to join, and we started having fun with some covers. Then, when we felt there was something to build on, we called in Andre’ and Juan. The chemistry between us was always great, and for a long while, we just had some fun in the garage until we decided it was time to make the step and go live. Which we did last Saturday at The Garage alongside the mighty Rankin, whom we thank for the opportunity, as it was originally their gig and we just butted in at the last moment", Philip confessed a few days after the gig! The crowd for the night was one of the largest and most enthusiastic that The Garage has seen this year. Despite Rogue's debut consisting only of covers, the audience responded with high energy and enthusiasm. When asked about composing original music, the band expressed interest but cited current time constraints. "We do have a lot of parts here and there that can lead to some original songs that we think can be quite interesting. However, at the moment, everyone is tied down with other matters and we feel we do not have the time required for composing proper original numbers. We do like this to be a fun band for a while but, when the time comes, I am sure we will again make another step forward and start composing our own songs. Ideas are plenty.” Adrian added, “I would make it a little more clear that yes, we intend to start working on some original material in the future, but for now - as you said - the focus is to beef up the repertoire, headline a few more gigs, gel together all the more and then we'll be working on our own material of which we have quite a bit (at least speaking for myself and probably Andre too).” As for their next gig, Rogue has no specific plans yet but aims to increase their repertoire to at least two hours and headline their own show soon. The event, organised by The Garage and Rankin, featured a stunning headlining performance by the latter, whose set combined bluesy influences with the thumping rock/metal sounds of legends like Motörhead and Down. They delivered a heavy dose of groove metal with touches of sludge, thrash, and alternative rock, playing songs from their debut album "Chrysalis" and debuting two new tracks from their upcoming album, 'Rage' and 'Midnight Caravan,' the latter being freshly finished just days before the performance.
