  • X-Vandals

X-Vandals facebook.com < Back The early 1980's were dominated by political tension throughout Europe and Malta was no exception. Towns and villages had gangs of teens ready to destabilize society and in Tarxien, something was coming to a boil with young metalheads disturbing the peace at 'The Bandli’ and running havoc in the narrow streets of this quiet village. A group of teens including 5 musicians tried to form a band!! Ray Micallef (Hamiemu) assumed the responsibility to form the army, Ray Schembri (Il-Bahri) came with the name, VANDALS. Mysterious circumstances occurred simultaneously to forge the name that would become every mother's nightmare. Mark Crusher joined the band in the beginning of 1984 and soon the band started writing material and played 2 gigs in Tarxien, of which one ended with the police arresting Il-Bahri concerning some violent accidents which occurred a week before. In 1985 the band played the Malta Sajf Festival and the Maltese music scene was shocked by the fast speed metal riffs the Vandals introduced to a generally laid-back audience relaxing with drink and pot. The Vandals were loud and fast, and the band started, after some months gaining, momentum by gigging frequently. Soon they had a big following and the concerts were selling during which the crowd started the first slam diving from the stage. This reputation solidified the band's participation in the much-awaited Malta Sajf festival for years, while playing gigs around the island. During that time, the band recorded some tapes, which were only distributed amongst friends. Mark left the band in 1989 and moved to the UK which although a major setback, the band managed to eventually find replacements in Albert Bell on bass and Rusty on vocals. The band also recruited Mark's brother Al Crusher to join for a heavier sound. With this line up the band started to write new material and prepared a set up for a number of shows titled BACK THROUGH THE AGES with Barbarian style of clothing, backdrops and a heavier Thrash Metal style. At this time someone brought up the idea of a Thrash Metal Live Opera and BEDROCK 1991-2091 was conceived, a fiction story of Modern Federal Europe dominated by wars and conflicts in which the band played 6 new songs. The cast was made from other bands musicians and people from the Vandals’ concerts crowd. During those years, the band released a video titled 'Crusading Sinners', and a demo tape called 'The Rise of Evil', which they tape traded in many countries around the world. Soon after Albert, Rusty and Aldo left the band to start other projects, while Josem on vocals, James on bass and Jason on guitar were recruited and the band moved into a more Thrash/Death Metal style. With this line up the band played 2 gigs in Torri Tigne, a venue they weren't allowed to play before, because of a policy made by the AST organisation. Around 1994 the band went on a hiatus. Ray Micallef, Ray Schembri and James Spiteri continued to gig with Abstrass, a band formed by Erich Azzopardi in the 80's. Micallef also played in Lord Adder together with ex Vandals Mark Crusher, who moved back from the UK and his brother Al. Schembri started the anarcho punk band SUBCULTURE and RAGE AGAINST SOCIETY + many other punk bands! During an ABSTRASS band practice, Rusty paid a visit and came up with the idea of a Vandals revamp, to which the band agreed after some more meetings and beer. In 2003 the band changed the name to X-VANDALS and work on what was the band's full-length debut album 'Erosion Of Our Liberties' commenced. The album was influenced by Thrash/HC Punk both lyrically and musically and the band played gigs and festivals frequently. A couple of years later the band recorded the second album 'Breach The Silence', which was released on 13th June 2009. At this stage the band decided to add another guitarist for a more heavier sound, and the choice fell on Mark Azzopardi (ex-Martyrium). With Mark the band flirted with a darker music style and laid the foundations for the next album titled 'Exhume The Truth', which was released in 2016, when Mark had already left the band and went to live in Sweden. 2018 was the band's 35th anniversary. DJ Noel Mifsud (ONE Radio/allRock Radio insisted that a celebration is a must! Ray Micallef came up with the idea to ask Albert Bell (ex Vandals bassist) to join and play on some tracks from the 1990's catalogue as a guest. Their first practice was exciting and felt as if it was 1990 again. During this celebration Mark Crusher and Aldo joined the band for a set from the 1980's catalogue, while the other guests were drummer Karen 'Grinder' (Delirium), daughter of Ray Micallef and a performance by Kyle and Nick Spiteri, sons of X-Vandals bassist James. During the night the band released their 4th album a compilation titled, 35 Years Of Metal 1983-2018, and the 35th anniversary t-shirts to mark the date. This night could not have happened without the help and support of the band's friend Mark Manicolo from Team Jalen kickboxing club. Organisation was up to REJECTS.COM , who organised a night which will forever be annexed in the story of Maltese metal history. It was a milestone for the band and on Ray Micallef's idea, the band asked Albert Bell to join the band permanently as their guitarist, marking the beginning of a new chapter, with the band immersed into writing new music and playing live around the island. Two appearances at the Farsons Beer Festival led to the release of the DVD 'Who We Are', in 2018 with the support and patience of Alan Zammit, one of the band's videographers. During the Covid-19 period, apathy was haunting X-Vandals, but with the perseverance of Ray Micallef, the band came out of that period with determination to start working steadily on the next album. 2023 marks the band's 40th anniversary and the release of the 5th X-Vandals album. • Paul Formosa, 928989f3-73a5-4e7c-af1b-8a7de372bbd2

< Back Paul Formosa Drums Modern Tribe Photography Paul Formosa is a drummer originating from the island of Gozo, who has been active in the local underground scene since 2012. He picked up the drumsticks at the age of 16 after being enchanted by the performance of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich in their San Diego gig in 1992, on the DVD ‘Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge’. Ascendor: (2012 – present) Paul was the founder of the Gozitan Metal band Ascendor. Guitarists Andy Fava and Joe Costa, bassist Blasio Muscat and vocalist Steve Muscat completed the line-up and performed several gigs across both islands. They had the honour of sharing the stage with massive bands such as Angel Witch and Evil Invaders as well as making it to the finals of the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the bands in 2013. Between 2012 and 2018, Ascendor released three studio albums; ‘Becoming’, ‘Drive my Demons Away’ and ‘Disturb the Dust’, all of which were heavily influenced by thrash metal. They released their most recent record ‘Circle of Violence’ in 2020 and the latter is considered as a pure old school thrash metal album from start to end. Upper Lip: (2018 - 2019) In the summer of 2018, Upper Lip’s founding member, lead guitarist Joseph Azzopardi asked Paul to temporarily fill in as the band’s drummer until they find a permanent replacement. During his time with the Gozitan rock band, Paul played numerous gigs as well as recording six of the ten tracks on Upper Lip’s debut album ‘Deep Within’. Angelcrypt: (2018 - 2019) Paul occupied the drum stool of local Melodeath titans Angelcrypt in 2018 and during the following year, he played at the annual editions of ‘Metal Over Malta’ and ‘Metal United Worldwide’ as well as touring with the band in Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany. The pinnacle of this experience was when Paul got the opportunity to contribute to and record the drums for Angelcrypt’s album ‘Dawn of the Emperor’. Paul had to reluctantly part ways with Angelcrypt solely due to the hectic and demanding nature of their touring schedule. Sonic Storm: (2020 - present) While working on Ascendor’s 2020 release ‘Circle of Violence’, Paul was asked to join Karl Friggieri and Francesco Degabriele in Sonic Storm. He has played a number of gigs with Sonic Storm while contemporarily working on the release of their debut album ‘Keys to Your Ruin’, which should be released in 2023. Zabbeth: (Session) In 2022 Sean Attard (Chaos) produced and released a Bathory worship album called ‘Zabbeth’ and asked Paul to contribute his drumming to the record. • Hellcommander Vargblod, d82e8fd2-5247-484c-b121-ad7730352b50

< Back Hellcommander Vargblod Vocals, Bass, Guitars Hellcommander Vargblod (real name: Mark Azzopardi), born in Malta in 1982, discovered the world of Metal back when he was still very young, remembering his dad and uncle playing Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and other 70s rock bands when he was still 5-6 years of age. About some time later he began to learn guitar with his dad, but it wasn’t until the early teens that H.V. took it more seriously on his instrument, and that was when he formed his first band – Hell Rats, together with 2 other friends from school. It was kind of a thrashy mix with NWOBHM and was also at the time already adding some black metal influences in the songwriting. At the same time he was also playing in another garage band called Mannaris. In the late 90s H.V. left these projects and joined local symphonic black metal act Martyrium with whom he played for 12 years, recording 3 full length albums, several gigs and two European tours. In 2008 he also joined Maltese hard rock veterans Lord Adder and did some local shows with them, while at the same time joining veteran thrash metal band X-Vandals with whom he played until 2013. In 2011 though, he felt that the style of Martyrium was moving farther away from his personal tastes and decided to go out solo, and actually formed two “one-man-band” projects – Draugul and Khaospath. Draugul was a folk/pagan/black metal project and under that name he released 4 full lengths, 1 split and 1 EP until 2019. With Khaospath, H.V. released 3 full lengths. At this time we must mention that H.V. had moved from Malta to Northern Sweden (April 2014) and shortly after, the one man band Khaospath became a full membered band as he found similar individuals with the same tastes almost immediately who showed interest in his material. Together with the new members, Khaospath performed various gigs in Sweden, Bulgaria, Finland and even appeared in Malta once again at the Xtreme Metal Assault in 2016. At around 2016, H.V guested on some guitar parts together with Lord Ahriman from Dark Funeral, with a band named Thokkian Vortex, the new project of the ex-frontman of Norwegian Black Metal act - Ancient. In 2019 though, due to a line up change in Khaospath, H.V. forged an alliance with Bjarkan and continued the project under a new name – Myronath, which is actually 2 Elvish words conjoined, and meaning “The Dark (or Hidden) Temple”. During the years Myronath saw quite a few members leaving their mark in the band with members like Lars Broddesson (ex-Marduk) who played drums on the 1st album “Into the Qliphoth”, and Fredrik Andersson (ex-Amon Amarth) who played drums on the 2nd release “Djevelkraft”. In May 2024 Myronath shall be releasing its third blasphemy with the Italian record label “Dusktone”. H.V and Bjarkan also formed another project together called Dodskold with which they released one album “Ödesriket” up till now. During the “Djevelkraft” period, H.V. and Bjarkan joined forces with the Norwegian Black Metal veterans Ragnarok and both were active in the band for 2 years, playing various renowned festivals and gigs, until late 2023 when all members but one left Ragnarok for reasons beyond their control, and formed a new entity – Helvitnir (Old Norse, meaning “Wolves of the Underworld”). The band consists of H.V. on bass and vocals, Bjarkan on guitars, Ihizahg (ex-Mayhem live) on guitars and none other than Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg from Mayhem on the drums. The band is set to record their first album together in late 2024 and to be released as well under the Italian label “Dusktone”. In his home studio – “Minas Morgul”, H.V. also helped out fellow brother in metal Zain with his debut solo album “Saint Vermin – Together as None” in 2023 and did mixing and mastering for the album. With Zain, and as well Clint Aquilina and Clayton Cini, H.V is currently writing material for a death metal project (Horned Majesty) that started out as a side thought but moved on to get a proper release. No concrete plans for the release are planned so far though, apart from a digital single released in late 2023. Since late 2023 Mark commenced collaborating with New Yorker Liliana Amatoria who approached him with her new project. Her debut EP featuring this collaboration titled 'Forgive me Father, I AM SIN!, was released on November 19, 2023. No rest for the wicked they say, and so it is, as while H.V. was writing material for the active bands, he ended up with extra stuff that did not quite fit the style that the bands were playing at that particular time. He decided to release that material as a solo EP with the same label he had been working with for Draugul, Khaospath and Dodskold. The project was named after his alias – Hellcommander and the EP was out on the 2nd week of February 2024 under the german record label “Pesttanz Klangschmiede”. H.V is exclusively endorsed by Ibanez Guitars and Richter Straps. And the journey into the Abyss continues… Discography Date Title Type Listen 2024 Year of the Goat EP Member of : Follow the artist
